WikiThesis Clay_S_Introductory_Talk
3 parts,
- why? what’s the expectations are?
- What’s expected when?
- Getting info from large collection of ideas (optional)
Background
You are going to be telling us the field you are working on. You have to tell us, the areas you are working. Tell us more, what you should be thinking about especially now. We need you to have precise description the domain you are working in. If you are gibvivng the overlap you should give us the story. Relevant fields in those and you should find those backgrounds. You gott be able to tell us that. What piece is carving for yourself. I am slicing out this piece for this. It has to be concise of info this is what I am trying to do. Getting it just right. This is what I am setting up to. It can be practical emotional, again you have to tell us this.
- you have to be doing progress. Find something interesting possible and hard. We know the problems you are setting up. spend most energy towards building and make that progress. Gotta explain what you are doing. His giving example in a bar, did you see that thing coming from ITP? Your work should be like that. Other people can look at and get smarter! POick an interesting thing make progress on it and tell us about it. For them getting smarter with each project is good thing. They like it. That’s the background. Technically two kinds of thesis here. Tell us which kind you want to do. One is project thesis and the other is written thesis. The written just a work of research and thought. The project thesis is mixed. You can do a planning piece. You eseentially decide yourself what part of it would be built.
- the other thing is if you told us you are doing cities and instruments and approach it from an itp benefit point of view. You are more own your own but you rely on other people on that sense. Bounce off ideas together. First week of December! Make an argument of why it should if you are working two people.
Schedule
Four phases:
- Now *First week in december, enter into the database, personal statement, abstract, basic research about your thesis. You have to have at least one thesis idea, you can have more. Bring hard copy to your advisor. Register a thesis seminar.
- start of semester, go back update the proposal., Narrow it down to choice of one, you hsould tell you advisor whether or not you are working on a project or research. If you are doing a research thesis you have to have an research paper not like documentation paper you are doing with project. Written thesis is tracked differently. By week one next semester, you should have a concise desription of what you ared oing why you are doing, some relevant websites sources about your concept. You are going to describe it goind back and re describing it. How comfortable you are what you are wokring on and how you will be specific. Iterative.
- During the semester: Week 3 tell us how you are approaching the problem directly. One you pick the wrong problem, and you can chenge your focus. REason: I got this problem and don’t know how to deal with that. All we want in the next couple of weeks I am going to layout the systematics. Plans. It is gotta help youi how you approach the problem. Change what you are doing or you can change your goal.
- Next midterm, you’ll present where you are. We are going to listen to you. Which tails are importand and which are not. and narrow it there. Someone will looking at itthat doesn’t feel the same air.
- week 11/14. Abstract title and URL in the thesis database. 13/14 You will present for outside review. Somebody not in your thesis class is looking at your thesis. Presentation of it to someone that doesn’t know about your thesis.
- First week in the may, thesis week. Turn in your documentation. Observable and video tape record.
- week7 is much more explanatory, much more conversational. Check in midpoint.
Preliminary Proposal
This is the thing we are looking at january and december. First time you tell us, this is what you are going to. Make it wrong instead of vague! Thesis Statemenet: 1-2 sentences What problem or project are you taking on. A paraggraph, we would prefer to hear three different statement about the same subject. Don’t be I am exploraing. Go through and give us handful of concrete things. Don’t keep it vague. Throw away an idea. Having lots of ideas and then throw some away. You can give us three different concerete statements. You can always change it but be concrete! mix of things you are interested in, people don’t know so give us background and keep us interested with this background. Do things that come into your head. keeps you going, that’s important too. Research: I can do better than that. Tell us what we shoulld be looking at. SOme context and shape you are doing. work decription: I am going to take this idea and expand this such such way. This is not a big chunk of writing. Couple of paragraphs. Do one for practice and go back do another one.
Documentation
You are turning in written documentation. Alongisde doing your thesis. We don’t wanna make you do so much things that you didn’t do, clearly explain what you did, it is more important our goal is two fold. We want to get in the habit of yourself explain it clearly. And we want you to leave something explainatory. Not an alternative thing to thesis, it is a comment in your code, it is something making of. What I did for my thesis, here you go.
Head
- Thesis abstract
- Personal Statement
Body
- Tell us the story what you did and why
- Research
- Methodology
- Conclusions
End Matter
- What you would do differently if you start it again, or where you want to go from there.
We are in the intersection of paper culture and artifact culture.
How long does this should be?
- Make it go as long as you will feel that it is going to enough to explain what it is.
- Quality and scale are not related.
Thesis instructors will be having their side of this documentation, we will circulate their CV adn you can look at there is going to 10 different thesis instructors. All of the thesis content comes from you, it is just you, he doesn’t agree that some instructor will assist you better than others. It is going to be more effected by the people you are in class with. Conversation environment mostly consists of that. ITP standed for Incomplete thesis projects. until 2000 they didn’t have any thesis class or week. It is more conversational than written.
It is useful when you are in a situation you are telling someone who doesn’t know anything what youare doing or technology you are using.
Presentation
- Unlike the documentation, you are deciding whatever method explaining how you are doing, Set up a problem and walk with this. Showing 4 different thesis examples that follows different methods. SOmething physcial HCI, finding two different kutup and then finding their mniddle point and going from there.
- This is your bubble.
Ideation
- Doing a thesis class he observerd: Now I have to write this. Analogy of 10 minutes of shirt film. So don’t try to give everything all ot once.
If you want to have good ideas you must have many ideas. Most of them will be wrong, and what you have to learn is which ones to throw away. Linus Pauling (1901-1994)
- Switch thinking languages. DO a stretch, diagram, switch thinking lines, don’t only write. Take pictures of things that interest you. There is arbitrary value in switching thinking lines.
- Ask questions about the work., It doesn’t related to the statements.
- Instead of saying what is my abstraction will be, say what one word that could in your abstract.
- Another technic is timeline. Always ask questions to yourself. Visualize yourself working in the thesis. Simulating different questions, is important in a sense revealing what is important to you.
- Any level of concrete prior to presentation. You will have different ideas concrete ideas. Simulating yourself with different questions.
- if you have a cloud of ideas in your mind, pick the one that is the most difficult one that you think. Pick that. If you have few ideas, it would be more concrete to get them. Gut level, coins are in in the air, which one is going to make me happier.
- If you are feeling you still don’t know what to do, turn in two different ideas. Sit down and talk through people, show other people things, talk to them. Narrow it down to collection of ideas, or deciding two different ideas, what you wanna real do is, absolutely, interesting idea could be x, and write it down, you can always throw it to the trash.
- Do try to explain those questions, and then give yourself some time and forget about those and then come back again, don’t stress yourself or stratching your head. Try anything that changes your approaches to problem.
- You can work complementary with a production class and thesis and related.
- Domain experts. talking with them.
